Luckily, most practices never have to make use of the data tapes that backup their clinical data. For the unlucky few however, a reliable data tape can be the difference between a couple of hours without the computers, and the loss of countless hours of patient data.
All practices should ensure that their data tapes are functioning correctly by investing in a tape verify for each tape at least once a year. Don't forget that if your data tape isn't working, you won't know there's a problem until disaster strikes and you need to recover from it.
